STARTup live Rhine Valley #1, Karlsruhe 23. – 25.9.2011

Supporting business creation and helping young entrepreneurs is at the core of the KIC InnoEnergy...

14 teams lined up and pitched their ideas to the auditorium at the start, and then further developed their business concepts, added to their team capacities and listened to the advice of mentors. The outcome was presented on the last day and competition was up to qualify for one of the prices.
KIC InnoEnergy Germany was a main sponsor, supported the 2 ½ days meeting with mentoring and awarding a prize for the best business creation idea in the field of sustainable energy. The winner was a young team from KIT with their idea on forming a business around a new concept for sea water desalination. Whereas present state of the art desalination uses a lot of energy to evaporate the water and remove the salt, the new idea is based on a super absorber, a technology well known from baby diapers. In an impressive demonstration the young team showed how few grams of super absorber powder stirred into a glass of water makes it into a gel. The industrialization would use this process in large scale to concentrate the pure water in the gel, keep the brine out and gain the water by pressing the gel. This can be done repetitively and high energy efficiency is expected.
Part of the price is a professional idea assessment, so the young team will walk a part onto the
, and – depending on the outcome – further along. A second part of the price is a teambuilding event in the fun climbing forest Kandel, giving the young team the opportunity to further develop their team spirit and practical examples on how to lift off and use safety gear when critical situations appear.

From Science to Business: Call for applications

ESADE, formal partner of KIC InnoEnergy, has recently opened a call for entries to its From Science...

This course and its contents are designed around the concept of a new tech-based entrepreneurial venture, specialty in the areas of sustainable energy.
Starting a new business includes a different array of tasks and operations. An overview of the process of identifying an opportunity, turning an idea into a product or service and making a business out of it will help the mind behind the invention to understand the whole process that starts once the discovery has been made.
In general, scientists and others engaged in the development of new knowledge are not usually the ones running the start-ups, as they are more focused on research than the development of new ventures, but their participation in the process will greatly improve the ratio of new inventions turned into new product or services.
It will always be necessary to have someone to take the ideas out of the lab and turn them into new ventures, be they researchers who decide to pursue a professional career in developing new businesses or other entrepreneurs who already have the knowledge and experience required in the business field. In either case, the participation of the senior scientist behind the invention will significantly increase the odds of a successful new company.

Schedule

One week: from 28th November to 2nd December. One 8-hour session every day.

Location

Sant Cugat ESADE Campus: Av. de Torreblanca 59, E - 08172 Sant Cugat del Vallès

In April 2011, KIC InnoEnergy finalized the definition of its Business Creation Services with the marketing name <link 53 _top internal-link>KIC InnoEnergy Highway™
.
The roll out started immediately and we are happy to announce that we have crossed the first humble but still important milestone of 25 cases of entrepreneurs, the majority coming from the market place, that have entered the Highway. There is no common pattern to those cases, but some repeating characteristics, such as: they mostly address systemic approaches, rather than components; the entrepreneurs are not juniors, but experienced people; the time to market is short; renewables is predominant, although there are some related to CCS. In any case, the passion of all of them is fresh air.

KIC InnoEnergy will launch already this year 2011 four Master programs and three Executive Modules. Although we did the promotion of those educational programmes only last May 2011, we have had more than 850 applicants from all over the world, for a target of 220 sits. These
are significantly enhanced compared to the traditional ones. The components of entrepreneurship and management, the “hands on” thanks to internships in industry, and the thesis, highly probable in one of KIC InnoEnergy technology projects, make of those programs a first in European education.

CC Germany: SME workshop on Chemical Fuels

Together with the Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the BW...

Together with the Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the BW Bank and the University of Stuttgart, KIC InnoEnergy has invited representatives of small and medium-sized companies to Karlsruhe on 14 July 2011 to explore the dialogue between industry and science in the field of sustainable energy supply, in particular through the use of innovative energy technologies, such as for example the use of chemical sources of energy, and to launch joint innovation projects.

Renewable sources of energy, especially wind energy, water power, bio-energy, solar energy or geothermic energy will play a major role in future energy supplies in Germany and Europe. Because fluctuations in the availability of the sun and wind have to be balanced out, for example by efficient but publicly acceptable energy storage, high-grade chemical energy sources generated by biological and fossil fuels or by processes of synthesis assume an important role, in addition of course to flexible-output power stations, a larger intelligently managed energy network or the supply-dependent coordination of consumption. “We see a large number of new business concepts here that can be developed by transferring the results of research into practical applications by business and we will support this process with the opportunities available to KIC” reflected the coordinator of the chemical fuels workgroup, Professor Dr Thomas Kolb of KIT.

“We need joint projects in which representatives from both research and industry are involved in order to be able to overcome the challenges that the future will bring. That is the only way that research results with innovation potential can quickly be translated into products ready to enter the market. The Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum represents above all the bridge to Europe and to European innovations and partners”, emphasised Professor Norbert Höptner, the Commissioner for Europe of the Minister of Finance and Economics and director of the Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum. Three interactive round-tables provide an opportunity to initiate joint projects on the subjects of “The Basic Materials of Chemical Energy Sources”, “Converting Chemical Energy Sources “ and “The Use of Chemical Energy Sources”.

Dr Frank Diedrich, General Manager of KIC InnoEnergy Germany introduced the objectives of KIC InnoEnergy SE and the different ways of participation. "It is possible to take part at different levels with different degrees of intensity" Diedrich explains. "The simplest way is to join as a project partner. This operates in practice such that partners from research and industry wishing to work together on a subject join forces. The partners then agree in a syndicate contract the goals that are to be achieved, the tasks each will assume, how much money is to be invested, how much support will be applied for and how the partners will deal with newly created patents. Under certain conditions, innovative tasks can be fully sponsored by KIC InnoEnergy, up to a maximum amount of € 100,000 a year."

Participation in KIC InnoEnergy opens up access to a network of leading European companies, research institutes and universities as well as to grants awarded for target-oriented work in the field of innovative, sustainable energy solutions. Renewable energy sources are the present focus (sun, wind and water), clean coal technologies, energy from chemical energy sources (including biomass), an intelligent European electricity network and storage, intelligent and energy-efficient buildings and cities, as well as the convergence of sustainable nuclear and renewable energy. KIC InnoEnergy is open to the participation of small and medium-sized companies and invites them to actively cooperate in shaping the future market.
