Transforming low-cost straw into high-value heating
Analyses show that in moderate climate countries maximum environmental benefit would come from using biomass locally for heating purposes, by using boilers. The limiting factors for EU-wide use of boilers in the range up to 1,5 MW are the emission and efficiency standards, which pose a problem in units of small/medium capacity range. The present project addresses this issue.
The project aims at constructing and providing to the market a new biomass heating boiler of medium size: 250 – 500 kW. The boiler will be equipped with innovative filtering and automatic feeding systems. The automatic combustion control system, that was never used before, will reduce the gaseous emissions such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, dioxins, furans and solid unburned parts. Additionally it will be equipped with automatic cleaning and ash removal systems. Consequently, the boiler will meet high environmental and efficiency standards, which will open a wide market in the UE and other countries like Ukraine, Kazakhstan or China.
In order to meet high emission standards, a new filtering system of exhaust gasses will be constructed and tested. The prototype of such system has already been designed and patented. Its innovative feature is that it serves simultaneously two purposes: drying the input biomass and removal of fine particulate emissions. Such technology will create a possibility to diversity the input biomass, in particular, that with high humidity, which is most often dumped in landfills, creating environmental problems. Still, it requires further improvements and trials to deal with other emission components and to achieve a commercial product meeting all environmental standards.
Recently, plans for BioEcoMatic new laboratory have been designed, as well as tests of the following systems have been carried out: electronic control system, multicyclone chamber measuring system, and electrostatic participator measuring system. Visualisation of the drying chamber and its interior has been also designed.
