Co-Location Center Iberia is in charge of managing KIC InnoEnergy activities in Spain and Portugal, as well as the thematic field Renewable Energy at a global level. Activities comprise innovation, business creation and education initiatives in the field of sustainable energy.
KIC InnoEnergy Iberia has corporate offices in Barcelona and Lisbon, as well as some premises devoted to incubating new companies in Sant-Cugat del Vallés (Barcelona area). Performed activities and provided services are, to a great extent, based on the assets and expertise of our partners, all of them leading Iberian industrial, research or academic organisations in the fields of Sustainable Energy and Innovation.

Innovation Projects
Co-Location Center Iberia manages six different innovation projects related to Renewable Energy Technologies and Energy Efficiency. The projects address some of the major challenges of these technologies and aim to produce a relevant impact on the market, by delivering innovative solutions (new products, services or processes). Some of the challenges addressed by these projects are: reduction of the cost of energy, reduction of the environmental impact, increase of operational security or increase energy storage capacity.
Current projects in the portfolio are:
EnThiPV – Encapsulation Technologies for Thin-Film Solar
Target: Improve lifetime of thin film solar photovoltaic cells (organic and CIGS) using affordable encapsulation techniques based on flexible, gas barrier and photostable films. Develop advanced high barrier measurement instrument with high reliability and automated measurement system for industrial use.
Main market oriented outputs:
- New encapsulation system for OPV and CIGS thin film solar cells
- Instrument for measuring barrier in industrial processes

OTS – Offshore Test Station
Target: Cross fertilize offshore renewable energy through prototype tests in real ocean conditions, delivering:
- Innovative components and systems
- New instrumentation, monitoring, simulation and control tools
- Recommendations and best practices
- Training
Main market oriented outputs:
- New turbine for wave energy conversion
- Low cost wave monitoring buoy
- Monitoring tool for maintenance planning
- Consultancy services

OFFWINDTECH – Offshore Wind Enabling Technology
Target: Develop miscellaneous technology (grid connection, park engineering, blades and airfoils, turbine dynamics simulation tools, etc.) for enabling deep water offshore wind energy at competitive costs.
Main market- oriented outputs:
- Tools for offshore grid configuration
- Monitoring tool for maintenance planning
- High performance airfoils for large floating wind turbines
- New simulation modules for floating wind turbines

NEPTUNE - Offshore Metocean Data Measuring Equipment and Wind, Wave and Current Analysis and Forecasting Software
Target: Develop equipment and software to reduce costs and risks for offshore wind farm site analysis, energy resource and operational condition short term forecasting
Main market- oriented outputs:
- LIDAR buoy prototype for wind, wave and current measurements. Serial production foreseen after project
- Site condition for complex Mediterranean Sea test site “Zèfir”
- User friendly and validated software for wind energy resource analysis and 1-5 day forecasting. Service business foreseen after project

TESCONSOL – Thermal Storage for Solar Concentrating Plants
Target: Development of cost effective thermal energy storage systems for CSP with investment costs lower than 25€/kWh.
Main market-oriented outputs:
- New tools for designing TES systems for both latent and sensible
- New materials for sensible and latent storage
- New materials for TES containers
- Plant control solutions for TES systems

LH03-IEE – Lighthouse Innodriver: Processes and Living Lab for Industrial Energy Efficiency
Target: Improve energy efficiency in industrial parks with SMEs:
- Development of new tools and systems
- Integration of renewables in industrial environments eliminating intermediate enery carriers (especially for thermal processes).
- Deployment of 2 living labs
Main market oriented outputs:
- New tools for solar thermal audits
- Intelligent Energy Management System
- New solar thermal collectors (3 types)
- New ESCO model for industrial parks

Education
Co-location Center Iberia is launching several education programmes in September 2011. These programmes aim to educate the future European leaders in the field of sustainable energy from both technology and management point of view. Each programme has its own specific focus, but all of them share common added-value features such as:
- Excellence in the specific field of the programme ensured by leading academic institutions
- Complementary technology/management education
- Education in business creation and innovation management
- Development of entrepreneurship spirit
- Education in personal competencies and transversal skills
- International mobility and exposure to international environment
- Involvement of key European players in the energy sector

MSc level Programmes
MSc in Renewable Energy
Description: The programme is aligned with the objectives of the European SET plan and the objectives of KIC InnoEnergy in the field of the renewable energies, namely: wind energy, concentrated solar thermal power, photovoltaic solar energy, ocean energy, hydro power and geothermal energy.
Duration: 2 years

Description: This programme is mainly directed towards students whose future ambitions lie in the spheres of creating and developing business opportunities and corporate innovation management. A specific path is designed for the sustainable energy sector.

CC Iberia supports entrepreneurs and companies to turn their ideas, researches or developments into successful products and services, thereby creating new and innovative businesses. Our services are organized around four dimensions:
- Technology (e.g., technology assessment, proof of concept, IP mapping, etc.)
- Market (e.g., business plan, competitive analysis, launching customer, etc.)
- People (e.g., team assessment, skills workshop, team complementation, etc.)
- Finance (e.g., access to seed funding, Venture Capital, etc.)
Services delivered by CC Iberia are intended for the best business opportunities in the field of sustainable energy stemming from:

- Any entrepreneur or company from Spain and Portugal.
After a positive assessment from KIC InnoEnergy, the parties sign a Business Creation Service Agreement and agree upon a project-specific Service Roadmap.
CC Iberia can provide office space to entrepreneurs in its incubator located at ESADE Creapolis Open & Cross Innovation Center located in Sant-Cugat del Vallés (Barcelona area). For those entrepreneurs not located in the Barcelona area, remote assistance is also possible.
